“Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into water, the actions of individuals can have far-reaching effects.”
– Dalai Lama
A little over three years ago I had an idea. I wanted to create a non-profit organization, focused on bringing a “face” to homelessness in New York City. I encountered many homeless individuals in my work as an emergency room psychiatrist and on my daily walks in New York City. I had huge aspirations, very little resources, and a nagging dream. In the fall of 2015, I founded Faces in Between, a non-profit organization which I hoped would “provide outreach, social resources and engagement to homeless individuals living in New York City.” I hoped to “inspire and empower people who are struggling with illness, poverty and homelessness by equipping them with tools in order to create a ‘face’ for their world.”
Sadly, after founding Faces in Between, I left New York City in the fall of 2017 in order to move to Virginia to start a family and a psychiatric non-profit organization. At the time, I thought my dream of Faces in Between would die with my departure. However, an extremely amazing human being, Danielle Levin contacted me and volunteered to take the reins. In an insanely short period of time, she has transformed the organization and cultivated it into even more than I could have imagined. She has now touched hundreds if not thousands of lives through her community outreach projects, community education, and stigma-busting campaigns. Lives have been transformed. Minds have been transformed. And it’s all growing exponentially every day.
You know how you sometimes want to make a huge difference, but don’t think that what you do matters? You know how you feel like small acts of kindness can’t really make a difference? Well, it does and they do! In fact, everything you do matters, and every act of kindness matters. Like immensely. And you can never fathom how your random small act of kindness will impact the universe (and I’m talking to you, K Dara!). Or how your little, silly idea might ripple into something huge. The little things really are BIG things!
Ripple on, Faces in Between. Ripple on, Danielle Levin.
